Getting from Taiyuan Wusu Airport into the city is no longer just a choice between a coach and a taxi. Metro Line 1 now links Wusu Terminals 1 and 2 with Taiyuan South, Taiyuan Station West Square, Wuyi Square and Liunan. If your hotel is near the line and your luggage is manageable, the metro is a useful first option to compare.

The details matter, however. Taiyuan (太原) and Taiyuan South (太原南) are different railway stations; Taiyuan Station East Square (太原站东广场) and West Square (太原站西广场) are separate metro stops; and a published whole-line operating period is not necessarily the departure time of the last train from the airport. Start with the full address of your hotel or the exact railway station on your ticket.

Choose for your destination: Wuyi Square, Liuxiang and Taiyuan South need different plans

The operator’s Line 1 station list shows direct services from the airport towards Helongwan calling at Taiyuan South, Taiyuan Station West Square, Wuyi Square, Liunan and Dananmen. Dananmen is the interchange with Line 2. There is no need to travel via the main railway station for every hotel, or to change trains for every central-city address.

Destination or situation Option to compare first Important detail
Wuyi Square and the Yingze Street corridor Line 1 to the appropriate stop, such as Wuyi Square, Liunan, Dananmen or Taoyuan Road Yingze Street is long. Choose for the hotel address, not just the street name.
Southern Liuxiang and old-city shopping areas Compare walking from Liunan with another connection suited to the hotel Liunan is not the front door of every hotel around Liuxiang and Zhonglou Street.
A train from Taiyuan South Line 1 towards Helongwan to Taiyuan South Leave the metro and follow the railway entrance signs; this is not a platform-to-platform connection.
A train from Taiyuan Railway Station Line 1 to Taiyuan Station West Square, following railway entry guidance Do not get off at East Square just because it comes first. The new east railway building is a separate construction project.
A late arrival, substantial luggage or a hotel far from the metro An authorised taxi or app car, or an airport coach confirmed to be running Compare the actual drop-off point, wait and price. A suitable bus after metro hours is not guaranteed.

If you are still deciding where to stay, the Taiyuan hotel and neighbourhood guide provides useful context. Plan for the accommodation entrance rather than a broad shopping-district label. Two hotels in the same area can involve quite different walks with luggage.

From T1 or T2, follow signs to metro entrance A and travel towards Helongwan

The airport metro station is named 武宿1号2号航站楼, Wusu Terminals 1 and 2. A February 2026 report of airport police transport advice describes access from the ground-floor arrivals halls of T1 and T2 to entrance A of the Line 1 airport station. Collect your baggage, follow the metro signs, then allow for metro security and buying or validating your ticket.

For the city, take the Helongwan (河龙湾) direction. For the return journey, look for Wusu Terminals 1 and 2. A national-rail ticket, airport-coach ticket or transit code for a different city is not automatically a valid metro ticket. If travelling with large bags, a pushchair or someone with reduced mobility, ask staff about the available lifts and accessible route rather than relying on an old exit photograph.

The station name explicitly refers to Terminals 1 and 2. An airport construction manager’s account published on 18 October 2026 still described T3 finishing work and ongoing supporting works, not an opening announcement. On the return, use your airline’s terminal notification rather than changing the destination because a new building appears in a development article.

RMB 2 is the metro starting fare, not a flat airport-to-city price

The Taiyuan Metro ticket rules use distance bands: RMB 2 covers the first 5 km, with higher fares for longer journeys. Select your final destination and pay the amount shown by the ticket machine or metro ticketing service. Do not assume that the minimum fare covers any airport journey.

At Dananmen, follow the interchange signs within the paid area for Line 2 rather than exiting and buying another ticket. If using a transit code, make sure the appropriate Taiyuan metro service is activated and has a working payment method. If registration, connectivity or battery power is a problem, use the ticket machine or customer-service centre instead of trying to resolve everything at the gate.

Save the exact destination name before travelling, then check it against the ticket machine or metro fare display. This helps avoid selecting a similarly named station. The separate China mobile payment guide can help with preparation before travelling.

Use 22:00 as the ordinary airport last-departure reference, not holiday or whole-line times

The operator’s September 2026 holiday announcement describes normal Line 1 terminus departures beginning at 06:00 and selected holiday last departures being extended from 22:00 to 23:00. Wusu Terminals 1 and 2 is a terminus, so 06:00–22:00 is the ordinary departure reference for planning, subject to the actual day’s operating notice.

The 23:00 extension applied to specified dates, 24–27 September and 30 September–7 October 2026. It is not evidence that airport trains run until 23:00 every night. Other descriptions give 22:50 or 22:51 as part of a whole-line operating period; those should not be read as the last opportunity to board at the airport. For conflicting information, check the station’s directional timetable or the metro enquiry line, 0351-96369.

A 22:00 last departure also does not mean a flight landing at 22:00 can connect. Leaving the aircraft, collecting baggage, completing international or regional arrival formalities and reaching the platform all take time. If your hotel requires Line 2, check the onward direction at Dananmen as well: catching Line 1 does not guarantee the second train is still available.

Taiyuan South is three stops away, but railway boarding still takes time

The airport police’s 2026 guide describes Taiyuan South as three stops from the airport on Line 1. That is a stop count, not three minutes, and it does not include baggage collection or railway security. If connecting from a flight to a high-speed train, do not set the gap between tickets using only the short metro ride.

Taiyuan Railway’s September 2025 transfer guide describes two options at the Taiyuan South metro station: leave by A, turn left and follow signs to the Level 1 railway entrance, or leave by B, turn right and take the escalator to the Level 2 entrance. Follow the current on-site directions and choose a suitable route for your luggage and mobility needs rather than treating an exit letter as more important than updated signs.

Your national-rail departure may be Taiyuan South or Taiyuan Railway Station. They are both served by Line 1, but they are not interchangeable. The China high-speed rail booking guide covers general ticket and document preparation; for this transfer, also check every part of the station name on your booking.

Taiyuan Station East Square and West Square are not equivalent railway entrances

Line 1 has two stops around the main station: Taiyuan Station East Square and Taiyuan Station West Square. Travelling from the airport, East Square comes first, but that does not make it the appropriate place to leave the metro for the current railway entrance. Plan for West Square and follow railway signs. Do not confuse this with the eastern entrance arrangements at the separate Taiyuan South station.

An original September 2026 construction report said the main station’s new east building had completed its underground works and was moving into above-ground construction. Descriptions of a future seamless rail–metro interchange are about the completed project, not proof that the building is already open to passengers.

For later travel dates, check whether the railway has announced an opening or changed the entry arrangements. The same naming discipline applies to a taxi booking: specify Taiyuan Railway Station or Taiyuan South and the appropriate entrance, rather than asking vaguely for “the high-speed station” and discovering the mismatch on arrival.

Airport coaches and city buses: confirm the current service rather than combine old timetables

The 2026 airport police guide confirms airport-coach services with departures adjusted in response to flights. If the metro has finished, your hotel is away from the line or you want to avoid several transfers with luggage, ask at arrivals which destinations are being served that evening, the next departure, the fare and the boarding point before choosing.

Airport-coach routes and departure arrangements can change. Do not combine different years’ versions of Line 1, Line 3 or a circular route into a timetable for your own travel date. In particular, confirm where you can board in the city for the return: a drop-off-only stop is not necessarily a pickup, and the east and west squares at South station should not be collapsed into one vague location.

Ordinary city buses are a different service from airport coaches. A January 2026 bus-company update reported by Taiyuan Evening News confirms G4 links Jiage Parking with Wusu Airport and that morning-peak departures had been improved to intervals of 20–25 minutes. That is not an all-day 20-minute promise, or a direct service to Wuyi Square and Liuxiang.

Routes such as 201 and G4 may also change stops during roadworks. A June 2026 construction-diversion notice was a date-specific arrangement, not a permanent October route description. Use city buses only after checking the current stop and direction. With bulky luggage or a tight connection, the metro or a vehicle taking you directly to the hotel can be easier to manage.

Taxis, app cars and the return journey: use the marked pickup area and work backwards

The airport police guide identifies clearly signed taxi and app-car pickup areas at the ground-floor arrivals level. For a taxi, use the authorised queue. For an app car, follow the meeting point supplied for that booking and match the vehicle and registration. Do not follow someone soliciting fares in arrivals or asking you to switch to a private payment arrangement.

A July 2025 report described the transport authorities posting taxi fare-reference boards at the airport and major railway stations. These help explain typical prices, but they are not a fixed quote for every traffic condition. Check the board, confirm the proper charging arrangement and retain the trip details and receipt. The destination, time of day and road conditions can affect the fare, so one figure cannot cover every city hotel.

For the return, work backwards from your flight: confirm the terminal and your airline’s check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines, then add the hotel-to-station or pickup journey, waiting, travel and airport walking time. For an early flight, a 06:00 first departure at the airport does not mean that every city station has an airport-bound train at 06:00 or that you can complete airport formalities in time.

For a group, compare the total cost and luggage capacity rather than only the price per person. If you need wheelchair access, extra bag space or a child seat, confirm the equipment with the transport provider in advance instead of assuming any vehicle will be suitable.

    Taiyuan airport-to-city FAQs

Does Taiyuan Wusu Airport have a metro connection?

Yes. Line 1’s Wusu Terminals 1 and 2 station serves the T1/T2 area. Travel towards Helongwan for Taiyuan South, Wuyi Square, Liunan and other city stops.

Does getting off at Liunan put me at every Liuxiang or Zhonglou Street hotel?

No. Liunan is useful for the southern Liuxiang area, but the shopping district is larger than one station entrance. Ask your hotel for the most suitable exit and final walking route.

Is the airport metro fare always RMB 2?

No. RMB 2 is the starting fare for up to 5 km. Select the final destination and pay the amount shown by the ticket machine or metro ticketing service.

Is the last airport metro at 22:00, 22:51 or 23:00?

Use 22:00 as the ordinary airport departure reference. The 23:00 time was a specified holiday extension, while 22:51 should not be read as an airport departure. Check the day’s directional timetable and any onward interchange.

Can I leave a very short gap between a flight and a train at Taiyuan South?

Do not plan using only the three-stop metro ride. Aircraft arrival, baggage, walking, waiting, railway security and boarding all take time, and a flight delay can disrupt the connection.

For a train from Taiyuan Railway Station, should I use East Square or West Square?

Plan for West Square and follow the current railway entrance guidance. The new east building was still under construction in September 2026. Do not confuse it with the separate east-side entrance at Taiyuan South.

After the metro closes, is there definitely a coach near my hotel?

No. Confirm that evening’s destinations, next departure and drop-off point. If none works, compare an authorised taxi, app car or a previously confirmed accommodation transfer.

Can I return to the airport from the same place the coach dropped me off?

Do not assume so. Some stops may be drop-off only, and the route or side of a railway station may differ by direction. Confirm the designated airport-bound pickup and current departure before leaving your hotel.

Check the station name, last-train direction and hotel entrance together

The main airport-to-city route is straightforward: follow the T1/T2 signs to metro entrance A, take Line 1 towards Helongwan and leave at the stop appropriate for Taiyuan South, Taiyuan Station West Square, Wuyi Square or your hotel. Keep a separate ground-transport option for late arrivals and early flights, and do not mistake whole-line closing times, holiday extensions or unfinished projects for promises about your journey.
