For Nanchang to Jingdezhen, start by searching for a direct train from Nanchang East to Jingdezhen North. Then work out the journey from your hotel to the departure station and from Jingdezhen North to your actual destination. The common mistakes happen around the railway journey: confusing Nanchang’s stations, choosing the wrong station square for a pickup, or assuming a sightseeing bus will take you back to the train.
A day trip can work if you keep the itinerary focused. An overnight stay makes more sense for evening browsing, a pottery workshop or a leisurely ceramics-shopping trip. Decide when you need to return and where your luggage will go before filling the day with attractions.
Start with the exact station names
| Name on the ticket | Role in this journey | What to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Nanchang East / 南昌东 | First search for direct services on the Changjinghuang corridor | It is not central Nanchang station; allow for reaching it |
| Nanchang West / 南昌西 | Worth comparing if you are already staying or arriving nearby | Do not assume the same departures or journey times as East |
| Nanchang / 南昌 | A separate railway station, to use when your chosen train specifies it | A city-wide search does not mean every result leaves here |
| Jingdezhen North / 景德镇北 | The arrival and return station for this high-speed route | Its north and south squares are both part of North station |
| Jingdezhen / 景德镇 | A different railway station name | Not shorthand for Jingdezhen North in bookings or pickup instructions |
The Changjinghuang high-speed railway opened on 27 December 2023, providing a more direct high-speed connection between Nanchang East and Jingdezhen North. Fastest-time figures in opening announcements describe the timetable at that point, not every train available today. Use the duration shown against your specific departure.
Choose the Nanchang departure station around your hotel
Central Nanchang: include the journey to East station
Nanchang Metro Line 2 now reaches Nanchang East; the eastern extension opened on 28 June 2025. Advice saying that the station has no metro connection is therefore outdated. If your hotel is on Line 2, compare the direct metro journey. From Line 1, use the metro network map to choose an interchange, such as Bayi Square, and follow Line 2 towards Nanchang East.
Your departure calculation needs more than the train’s scheduled time. Include the walk to the metro, waiting, the ride, the station transfer and railway entry procedures. Follow the transfer signs from the metro to railway security and your departure hall; the shared station name does not eliminate that walk. Early departures also require checking whether the metro will be operating soon enough.
Honggutan or the West station area: compare the whole journey
If you are already near Nanchang West, search departures there as well. A faster train from East may be less convenient once you add the cross-city journey. Keep the date, approximate departure window and Jingdezhen arrival station consistent, and check whether a suggested itinerary is direct or involves another train.
If accommodation is still undecided, the Nanchang hotel-area guide helps put sightseeing and onward travel in the same plan. Moving hotels solely to save a small amount on a train can create another transfer and an inconvenient evening. Ticket price is only one part of the decision.
Check the outward and return journeys separately
On China Railway 12306, begin with Nanchang East, Jingdezhen North and your travel date. A broader Nanchang search may show different departure stations, so open the selected result before paying. Compare other Nanchang stations deliberately rather than assuming that the city heading identifies your boarding point.
- Check both stations, the travel date, passenger document details, seat category and total price.
- Compare hotel-to-hotel journeys, not just time spent on the train.
- For a day trip, choose an acceptable return before committing to timed activities.
- If companions book separately, match the exact train and date rather than agreeing vaguely to travel in the morning.
- A waitlist request is not a confirmed ticket. Avoid treating a tightly connected, inflexible activity as secure before travel is confirmed.
Fares depend on the service, seat and sales arrangements. A low price in a screenshot is not a fixed fare for the corridor. For document, booking and waitlist procedures, use the separate China high-speed rail booking guide. The priority here is getting the stations and connections right.
Read the return ticket from scratch. It may take you to a different Nanchang station from the one you used that morning. That matters particularly if luggage remains at your first hotel or you have another train to catch. A ticket into Nanchang East does not complete a connection departing from Nanchang West.
At Jingdezhen North, choose your square before arranging a pickup
Jingdezhen North has north and south squares. The transport department’s February 2026 guidance explains that the waiting areas connect inside the station by a footbridge. For your return, use the day’s gate information and signs to choose an entrance. This does not mean that changing squares outside is a quick walk, or that passengers should cross restricted railway areas.
Before requesting a car, establish which square you have reached and follow signs to its designated pickup area. Send the complete square name and pickup location to your driver or host: 景德镇北站南广场 for the south square, or 景德镇北站北广场 for the north square. “North station” and “the north square of North station” are not interchangeable instructions. If your party splits up to find transport, agree on a clearly named meeting point first.
Some sightseeing buses in the February notice operated only from 19 to 23 February. Their listed times are not a year-round timetable. For a bus, check the current destination board; for a booked car, reach the appropriate pickup area before requesting it, rather than leaving the driver waiting while you search underground corridors.
Getting to the ceramics districts
| First destination | A sensible arrival plan | Confirm before getting out |
|---|---|---|
| Taoxichuan / 陶溪川 | Drop luggage at your hotel first, or compare current bus and car options if travelling light | The east gate, south gate and theatre are different drop-off points |
| Taoyangli / 陶阳里 and the Imperial Kiln area | Use your hotel entrance or the entry point attached to your booking | A pedestrian entrance may differ from the nearest vehicle stop |
| China Ceramics Museum / 中国陶瓷博物馆 | Plan around your reservation, plus any bag storage and walking | Do not confuse it with Taobo City or another ceramics venue |
| Sanbao / 三宝 | Specify the particular guesthouse, studio or transfer point | Sanbao is an area, not one entrance with everything beside it |
September 2026 transport changes distinguish the daytime Yaohuohong (窑火红) service, the evening Yezhushan (夜珠山) loop and the Sanbao (三宝) scenic-area service. Their names can help when asking staff for directions. Do not assume that each starts at the railway station, or that an evening sightseeing loop will get you back to your train.
The north square also gained regional coach services in April 2026, including routes towards Yaoli, Leping and other destinations. These are not a universal city sightseeing shuttle. Check the destination, intermediate stops and return arrangement before boarding a vehicle simply because its sign mentions tourism.
The Jingdezhen hotel-area guide can help align accommodation with your first afternoon and evening. If arriving later in the day, checking in and exploring one area is usually simpler than carrying luggage between districts. A well-known landmark near a hotel also does not guarantee that a car can wait outside its actual entrance.
A day trip or an overnight stay?
For a day trip, choose one main interest, then add a nearby meal or shopping stop. Avoid treating Taoyangli, the museum, Taoxichuan and Sanbao as interchangeable stops on a short city stroll. Timed entry, transfers and packaging purchases all consume time. Once the return train is booked, decide when you will stop browsing, not just when you hope to reach the station.
An overnight stay gives you more flexibility for an evening district or a longer pottery session. A class finishing does not necessarily mean the work is ready to take away. Ask the studio about firing, collection or delivery before booking, particularly if you leave the following morning. Keep the class address as well as its name; the venue might not be at the landmark used in its advertising.
The October 2026 National Day transport report describes holiday hotel services and a holiday bus pass. Those measures should not be assumed to continue unchanged on ordinary dates. For a late arrival, confirm hotel reception arrangements and the evening’s transport, with a suitable car option if needed. A sightseeing bus should not be your only fallback.
If returning to Nanchang for a flight, build the airport journey separately. Do not link a short theoretical train ride to a minimum airport transfer and call the whole connection comfortable. The useful margin depends on your arrival station, luggage and the airline’s requirements, not just the distance between the cities.
Budget, fragile purchases and the return journey
Separate your budget into reaching the Nanchang station, the intercity ticket, transport within Jingdezhen and the return. When comparing cars with buses, establish whether a quote is per person or per vehicle, whether waiting is included, and whether it ends at the hotel door or a nearby stop. Groups should confirm seat and luggage capacity before dividing a quote by the number of travellers.
Think about carrying ceramics before buying them. Ask the seller to wrap fragile pieces individually and keep the packaging manageable for safe handling and any inspection. A box of pottery plus a suitcase can make a previously straightforward bus journey awkward. If you prefer delivery, confirm the destination, charge and damage arrangements rather than leaving packing and shipping until you are already rushing for a train.
Before leaving the hotel or studio, check that everyone has collected stored bags and purchases. Set navigation to Jingdezhen North and the appropriate entrance, not automatically to the point where you arrived. Save the return ticket and the full station name somewhere accessible if your phone signal is unreliable.
If another train follows in Nanchang, inspect both station names again. A cross-station connection involves real city travel, even when both tickets show the same city. Avoid choosing a plan that works only if the first train, pickup, road traffic and station entry all go perfectly.
Frequently asked questions
Which stations should I search first?
Start with Nanchang East to Jingdezhen North, then compare West or central Nanchang departures if they suit your location. The best option is the most practical complete journey, not automatically the shortest rail leg.
Does Nanchang East have a metro connection?
Yes. Line 2’s extension reached Nanchang East on 28 June 2025. Check current operating hours and your transfer separately; an early high-speed departure may be too early for the first metro.
Are Jingdezhen and Jingdezhen North the same station?
No. Keep the full name in tickets, navigation and messages to drivers. Jingdezhen North’s south square is still part of North station, not the separate station called Jingdezhen.
Can I walk from the train to Taoxichuan?
Do not plan it as an attraction immediately outside the station. Check the route to the specific gate or hotel and compare current bus or car options, especially with luggage or fragile purchases.
Which square should I use at Jingdezhen North?
Use the square serving your chosen onward transport, following current signs. For departure, check the day’s gate information. Confirm the square before requesting a car and use its designated pickup location.
Do holiday sightseeing buses run on ordinary weekdays?
Not necessarily. Some 2026 notices specify limited holiday dates. Check that the service operates on your date, which square it uses and whether a suitable return is available.
Is one day in Jingdezhen enough?
A focused day trip is possible, but avoid packing several separate districts into it. Staying overnight is easier if evening browsing or a substantial pottery workshop is a priority.
Should I change transport after buying ceramics?
Reassess the number and size of packages, safe handling and vehicle space. Ask about delivery for bulky purchases and check current railway luggage rules. Leave time for packing rather than doing it on the way to the station.
