Plan Xi’an’s Bell Tower area, southern City Wall and Qujiang as distinct parts of a visit. Walk around the central streets, use the metro for the move towards the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, and choose the City Wall entrance before choosing a station. Nearby map pins can still involve a substantial walk.
Non-official geographic map of central Xi’an’s walled city and the Dayanta–Qujiang area to the south. Use it to compare sightseeing areas, not as a metro-network, station-exit or city-wall entrance guide. Follow current entrance signs and access notices.

Choose a starting point
| Destination | Station to compare | Final-leg decision |
|---|---|---|
| Bell and Drum Towers | Zhonglou | Different underground passages lead to different streets |
| South Gate City Wall visit | Yongningmen on Line 2 | Continue to the designated admission entrance |
| Giant Wild Goose Pagoda | Dayanta | North square, temple grounds and southern promenade are different places |
| Great Tang All Day Mall and Qujiang | Compare stations around Dayanta or Datang Furongyuan | Plan a one-way walk and leave near its endpoint |
| Xiaozhai and museum visits | Xiaozhai or the station for the specific venue | Use the reserved museum entrance as your destination |
A central day can combine the towers and South Gate; another can focus on a museum, the pagoda and Qujiang. Include your hotel if you need an afternoon break. Avoiding an unnecessary cross-city return often matters more than a small fare discount.
The City Wall: check admission first
The wall has different access points, and not every gate offers admission at every time. Match your ticket, entry period and current opening arrangements to the gate you intend to use. A photograph outside the wall and a visit on top require different routes.
If you descend somewhere else, plan the return from that location. Store large luggage and confirm collection hours. Metro lifts do not establish step-free access throughout the attraction; ask about suitable arrangements before relying on them.
Make Qujiang an onward walk
Choose which side of the pagoda you want to see and whether you will enter the temple, then continue towards the southern promenade and dinner. Dayanta station still leaves walking to the southern area. If the visit ends farther south, compare a nearby station or legal pickup point instead of retracing the whole route.
Evening crowds may change station access and road arrangements. Allow time to leave the busiest area, locate the station and pass security. With children or older companions, choose a shorter section and save places to rest.
Metro, Chang’an Tong and travel codes
- Check the route and fare for the actual stations.
- Prepare a single ticket, supported Chang’an Tong card or activated Xi’an metro code.
- Each fare-paying traveller uses their own credential and the same one at exit.
- Resolve failed taps, low balance or an unpowered phone at the service centre before continuing.
Chang’an Tong is a payment tool, not an all-inclusive sightseeing pass. Compare card cost, coverage and refund conditions. A short-stay visitor with a reliable travel code can pay per journey. Evaluate any day or multi-ride product against the routes you will actually take.
Taiwan’s EasyCard and iPASS are not Xi’an transit cards. Hong Kong visitors should check whether their Octopus product supports mainland China T-Union. Linking an overseas bank card for retail purchases does not prove the metro service is activated; test it and keep a ticket-purchase backup.
When buses and taxis help
A direct surface bus can suit a short trip. Check the direction and return stop. Transfer discounts depend on the payment method and eligible services; do not add a journey merely to earn a small discount.
Taxis help with rain, a group or a tiring final stretch, but busy areas around the towers and Qujiang may restrict access. Choose a vehicle-accessible junction and confirm the hotel’s full Chinese branch name. “Near the South Gate” is an imprecise meeting point.
Sightseeing buses have different tickets and schedules from ordinary buses. Before purchasing, check departure frequency, whether you can get off and reboard, language and the final stop. Passing attractions does not include their admission.
Keep longer trips separate
The Terracotta Warriors are not a short city-centre transfer: use Xi’an to the Terracotta Warriors. Airport travel belongs in the Xi’an Airport guide, while Xi’an to Huashan needs its own day plan.
For departure, distinguish Xi’an railway station from Xi’an North and allow for security after the metro journey. The Xi’an accommodation guide helps choose between a central base and Qujiang.
Frequently asked questions
Is Yongningmen metro station the wall ticket entrance?
No. Continue to the designated admission point and allow time for checking tickets.
Are the pagoda and Great Tang All Day Mall the same place?
They suit a connected visit, but have different approaches and a sizeable walking area.
Is Chang’an Tong always cheaper than a travel code?
Compare the card cost, real ride count and applicable discounts. Few journeys may not justify buying a card.
Is a taxi from Qujiang to the Bell Tower always quickest?
No. Reaching the pickup, waiting and traffic all count. Compare the complete metro option while it is operating.
