Choose which side of Erhai you want before choosing Dali transport. From the ancient town, Xizhou and western villages fit a western route. Shuanglang or eastern places such as Wenbi and Little Putuo need a different plan. Trying to stop everywhere in one day can leave more time in a vehicle than beside the lake.
Non-official geographic map of Erhai and both shores, showing the relative positions of Dali, Xizhou, Shuanglang and Haidong. Existing roads and water links do not confirm current sightseeing-bus or boat services or permit cars on the ecological corridor. Three ways to travel
| Mode | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Ordinary bus | Xiaguan, the railway station, ancient town and direct local routes | More stops and a walk to the hotel entrance |
| Erhai sightseeing bus | Travellers happy to reserve departures between designated stops | The next departure shapes your time at each stop |
| Private car or taxi | Groups, luggage and customised stopping times | Higher cost and a need to confirm hours, distance and access |
Ask your hotel for a vehicle-accessible entrance. Route 4 runs along the ancient town’s southern and western approaches, while route 8 serves the eastern side. Choose according to the hotel, not merely the words “ancient town” on a destination display.
Xizhou, Shuanglang and the two shores
The sightseeing bus’s western route links the ancient town, western villages, Xizhou, Butterfly Spring and Shuanglang. Choose a few stops rather than getting off everywhere. If staying in Shuanglang that night, ending there can avoid returning to the ancient town for luggage.
The eastern route serves a different chain through Xiaguan and eastern lakeside places towards Shuanglang. The two sides are not metro lines connected across the middle of the lake. Check the whole onward journey before lingering at a café.
Booking the sightseeing bus
- Select the product by validity, included transport, child rules and usable dates.
- Check activation. The operator’s guide uses purchase followed by activation; follow the current order’s timing terms.
- Reserve the origin, destination and available departure. The ancient-town stop is the designated Erhai service centre, not any gate.
- Arrive early enough to find the boarding point and present the ticket.
Secure the ride back to your accommodation before committing to long stops. Unlimited rides do not guarantee a seat on every departure or pickup anywhere. Check whether airport buses, attraction links or ancient-town electric vehicles are included in the selected product.
Compare the current per-person bus price plus excluded connections with a whole-vehicle quote. One return visit to Xizhou may not need the longest-validity pass. Repeated journeys across several days can make a broader product more useful.
Private cars: agree on the real itinerary
Give the operator hotel addresses, stops, final return time, passenger count and luggage. Confirm the service area, included hours and distance, parking and overtime charges. A charter does not grant access to pedestrian or ecological-corridor restrictions.
Klook’s Erhai charter offers different vehicles, with recommended passenger numbers and baggage capacity below a simple reading of the seat label. Do not assume a five-seat vehicle carries five travellers plus large cases. Distant places mentioned on a product page are not automatically all included in one day’s route.
Reaching the ecological corridor
The western ecological corridor is a slow-travel environment. The road drop-off may be separate from the lakeside path. Save the entrance and any bicycle-service point, then follow local access rules. Renting a vehicle does not mean that vehicle type is allowed everywhere.
For bicycles, ask about return location, rental time, rain and one-way returns. A short lakefront section is enough for a relaxed visit; the complete road circuit should not be treated as a casual short ride.
Payment, luggage and the return
Ordinary buses use their accepted cash, card or travel-code methods; sightseeing buses and charters use booking credentials. Taiwan’s EasyCard is not a substitute. Test app payment and confirm luggage size and storage before reserving a tourist vehicle.
Before sunset in Shuanglang, confirm the return bus or arranged car. Allow for the separate journey to Dali railway station the next day. See Kunming to Dali, Dali to Lijiang and the Dali accommodation guide for onward travel and base choices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I board any sightseeing bus once I own a pass?
Follow the reservation and designated-stop process. Unlimited rides do not remove departure or capacity conditions.
Is staying in Shuanglang more expensive for transport?
It depends on the shore you visit each day. Repeated cross-lake-area journeys add time and cost.
Can a charter reach every lakeside photo spot?
No. Confirm the nearest legal stop and remaining walk for restricted areas.
Is Dali railway station inside the ancient town?
No. Plan a bus, shuttle or car to the correct accommodation entrance.
