For Suzhou’s old-town sights, Suzhou station is a useful starting point for the Humble Administrator’s Garden, Pingjiang Road and Guanqian Street. Searches also show Suzhou North and South. A shorter train ride may leave you farther from the old town, so weigh the local connection before choosing the fastest result.
Suzhou South is in the Fenhu/Lili area of Wujiang, not a convenient southern entrance to the old town. Hangzhou East and Hangzhou West are also separate departure stations. This guide puts both ends of the journey together so that a quick train does not turn into a long and unexpected transfer.
Suzhou, North or South: match the station to the plan
| Railway station | Worth checking first for | Arrival connection |
|---|---|---|
| Suzhou / 苏州 | Old-city accommodation, gardens and central sightseeing | Metro Lines 2 and 4, then the correct attraction or hotel entrance |
| Suzhou North / 苏州北 | Xiangcheng, northern accommodation or a particularly suitable service | Metro Line 2 and any necessary onward change |
| Suzhou South / 苏州南 | Fenhu, Lili and a preplanned southern-region itinerary | Confirm a bus, customized coach or car connection |
| Suzhou Industrial Park or New District stations | An address in the relevant part of the city | Only compare when the travel date has a suitable service |
Suzhou Railway Station connects with Metro Lines 2 and 4; Suzhou North connects with Line 2. The latter metro stop is labelled 高铁苏州北站 (Gaotie Suzhou North), referring to the same railway hub. Match the name on your train ticket before planning the hotel transfer.
South requires more care. A project description mentioning future metro infrastructure is not proof of a train you can board today. Likewise, a service described as a “Tongli metro feeder” means ground transport connecting to the metro, not that Line 4 directly serves Suzhou South. Confirm the live connection rather than relying on a launch announcement or holiday timetable.
Three different Suzhou itineraries
Classical gardens, Pingjiang Road and the old city
Start by comparing arrivals at Suzhou Railway Station, then use the exact hotel or attraction address for local directions. The old city is not a single stop. If moving between hotels with a suitcase, arrange to leave it somewhere confirmed before visiting gardens and pedestrian streets.
A timed garden or museum reservation also needs a realistic margin after the train. Count exiting the station, onward transport, luggage storage and finding the correct entrance. Booking an appointment immediately after the train’s scheduled arrival creates pressure without adding much useful sightseeing time.
Jinji Lake and Industrial Park accommodation
Look at the actual address rather than assuming every hotel in the Industrial Park is close to one station. The two sides of Jinji Lake, the exhibition area and other parts of the district can need different routes. Compare the available railway arrivals against the final metro journey or taxi trip.
Lili, Fenhu and the Wujiang area
If this is the region you intend to visit, available trains from Hangzhou West to Suzhou South deserve a closer look. You still need to confirm the final connection, including for Tongli or a hotel elsewhere in Wujiang. Tongli metro station, Tongli’s historic-town entrance and Suzhou South are not different names for the same place.
Hangzhou East, West and Hangzhou Railway Station
Search the cities to understand the available services, then narrow the results to exact stations. Hangzhou East often appears in intercity searches; Hangzhou West can feature in options to Suzhou South. Hangzhou Railway Station is also known as Chengzhan. None is interchangeable with the others.
A hotel around West Lake does not make every Hangzhou station equally convenient. Write down the five parts of each option: hotel to departure station, station checks, the train, local transport in Suzhou, and the final walk. A saving on the railway can disappear if the journey begins with a less convenient cross-city transfer.
If connecting from Xiaoshan Airport, make the same distinction between East and West. Landing, immigration, baggage collection and airport transport all precede boarding. Read the rail ticket’s change conditions before choosing a tight connection after a separately booked flight.
Direct train, connection or private car?
| Option | When to consider it | What to inspect |
|---|---|---|
| Direct train | A suitable service exists between useful stations | Actual journey length and station names, not only the train letter |
| Connecting trains | Direct availability or timing does not work | Same-station versus cross-city transfer, both tickets and usable margin |
| Private intercity vehicle | A group, difficult luggage or addresses far from stations | Full quote, tolls, waiting, vehicle capacity and road conditions |
| Conventional train | Flexible timing and a meaningful saving | Seat type, arrival hour and the extra time spent travelling |
The existence of direct trains between the cities does not mean every station pair has one. A search result offering a connection may involve different stations in Shanghai. Inspect that carefully: crossing the city is not a short walk between platforms.
A private car removes railway-station handling but introduces exposure to road congestion. Confirm whether the quote is for a dedicated vehicle between your two addresses or a shared service to a meeting point. Include large bags and any child-seat requirement when asking about capacity.
Train time and fare: two very different Suzhou arrivals
The public timetable for 30 September 2026 lists G7372 from Hangzhou East at 08:09 to Suzhou at 10:03: 1 hr 54 min, second class CNY133. G7580 from Hangzhou West at 08:12 to Suzhou South at 09:02 takes 50 minutes and displays CNY67. These are dated references for different destinations, not interchangeable tickets.
For the old town, begin with roughly two hours on the train to Suzhou Railway Station plus the local connection. For Lili or Fenhu, investigate the approximately one-hour South Station option. The quicker railway arrival can lose its advantage if you then need a lengthy road trip to the gardens.
Use 12306 or compare Trip.com and Klook after setting exact stations and class. Review the total charge, direct-service status and ticket issuance.
Before going to the station
Save the full station names and train number. Book with your own accepted passport or mainland travel permit and carry the original; ask staff for a manual check if a reader cannot process it. A screenshot of the booking is useful for directions, but does not replace the document.
For an unfamiliar departure station, a 45–60-minute arrival buffer gives time for security and navigation. This is a planning suggestion. Keep the destination in Chinese ready for your Suzhou hotel or pickup driver, especially if it is Suzhou South.
Leaving the station and reaching your hotel
At Suzhou Railway Station, follow the signs for Metro Lines 2 and 4 after leaving the railway area. At Suzhou North, look for Line 2. Then verify the direction against your destination. If taking a car, specify the full station name and square or exit: staffed taxi queues and app-booked pickup points may be different.
The Suzhou government’s transport guide and metro network diagram help establish the station relationships. The page also contains holiday-specific measures, so do not treat every special bus or extended service in it as a year-round arrangement. Check travel-date notices for temporary access changes.
At Suzhou South, a prebooked coach confirmation should state its pickup point. If using local buses, verify the current route and destination. Follow feeder-bus signs only if that is the service you need; do not expect them to lead to a Line 4 platform beneath the railway station. Changing your rail arrival also means revising any hotel pickup.
Luggage and onward travel
When relocating from Hangzhou to Suzhou, dropping bags at your hotel before sightseeing can make the day more comfortable. Check the railway luggage rules for unusual or bulky items. Separately confirm storage with the actual hotel or facility; do not assume every station has a suitable locker available.
For a day trip, choose one main area and secure a workable return before filling the day with attractions. You can book the outward and return journeys through different Suzhou stations, but only do so deliberately. Discovering at the end of the day that the return leaves from Suzhou South rather than Suzhou Railway Station is an avoidable problem.
If Shanghai is your next destination, compare a direct onward itinerary from Suzhou rather than automatically returning to Hangzhou. That works best when your luggage travels with you or its storage plan does not force a detour. Keep each ticket and hotel change aligned with the actual sequence of cities.
Ending the route in Shanghai
The Shanghai–Suzhou station comparison helps identify the railway hubs at both ends, while our Shanghai accommodation guide helps plan the next hotel. Taking luggage onward can avoid a detour back to Hangzhou.
A common planning question
Should I choose Suzhou South for a faster trip to the old town?
Not on rail time alone. South serves Fenhu and Lili; compare Suzhou Railway Station and the complete old-town connection.
