Getting from Hohhot Airport to the city starts with one essential check: is your flight using Baita or Shengle? These are different airports, not interchangeable names for the same terminal. For a confirmed Baita arrival, consider Metro Line 1 if your hotel is convenient to the line; a licensed taxi or arranged transfer may be easier with several bags. An airport bus is worth comparing when its actual stop suits your address. Keep Baita’s existing routes separate from the proposed Shengle arrangements.
Confirm the airport before choosing your transport
A joint notice from Hohhot’s municipal government and the regional airports group proposes opening Shengle Airport at 00:00 on 26 November 2026, with Baita closing simultaneously. The October 2026 notice describes a proposed transition, not a completed opening. Consult the airport’s relocation announcement and your airline’s latest flight notification before travelling.
This matters particularly when your outward and return journeys fall on opposite sides of the proposed change. A transfer that works on arrival may be wrong for departure. Do not use a construction-completion story, an old booking screenshot or a familiar map pin as a substitute for checking the airport assigned to your flight.
| Your situation | What to arrange | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|
| Airline confirms Baita | Check the terminal, then compare existing ground transport | News about Shengle does not change your flight automatically |
| Travel close to the proposed transition | Confirm both flights and both transfer bookings separately | An earlier confirmation is not the latest flight advice |
| Airline confirms Shengle | Check that airport’s current services and pickup arrangements | Baita’s airport metro station is not a Shengle connection |
| Delay, date change or conflicting notices | Confirm the flight with the airline before changing transport | A transfer between the two airports is not automatically included |
Give a transfer provider the full airport name, flight date, flight number and terminal, and have the actual destination confirmed in writing. An “airport hotel” also needs checking: which airport is it near, and does its shuttle serve your particular flight? Recheck the return booking rather than simply copying the arrival address.
For Baita, save 呼和浩特白塔国际机场; for Shengle, save 呼和浩特盛乐国际机场. Show the full text rather than relying on the shared city name. A driver confirming “Hohhot” has not yet confirmed which airport they intend to use, so settle that point before discussing meeting arrangements, vehicle choice or price.
Using the metro from Baita Airport
Start with the terminal, not just the station name
The operator’s station and facilities directory lists Bayan (Airport), written 坝堰(机场), on Line 1, along with Baita West, Hohhot East Railway Station and Xinhua Square. For Baita, use Bayan (Airport) as the starting point when checking a citybound journey. Baita West is another station on the same line; its airport-related name does not make it the correct choice for every terminal.
Baita has domestic and international terminal facilities. After collecting your bags, follow the signs for ground transport from your actual arrival building. If you need step-free access, ask airport staff about the suitable entrance and lifts rather than following a map’s shortest walking route. International arrivals must also allow for immigration and baggage collection before treating a metro departure as achievable.
Xinhua Square and Hohhot’s two railway stations
From the Baita side, take Line 1 towards Yili Health Valley (伊利健康谷) for Hohhot East Railway Station and Xinhua Square. Xinhua Square is the interchange between Lines 1 and 2. To reach Hohhot Railway Station, change there to Line 2 towards Tali East Road (塔利东路). Check the station printed on your railway ticket before choosing a route.
Hohhot Railway Station and Hohhot East Railway Station are separate places. The east station is 呼和浩特东站; the main station is 呼和浩特站. Save the Chinese name alongside your booking so that a driver, hotel receptionist or station sign can help resolve any ambiguity. Searching only for “Hohhot train station” can send you to the wrong one.
A metro stop with the railway station’s name does not mean an instant connection to your train. Allow for leaving the metro, locating the railway entrance, security and reaching the waiting area. A separately purchased train ticket does not automatically become a protected connection from your flight. For booking and identification questions, use the China high-speed rail booking guide.
| Destination after Baita | Route to compare | Include in your plan |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel near Xinhua Square | Line 1 to Xinhua Square, then the hotel connection | Exit direction, road crossings and luggage walk |
| Inner Mongolia Museum or municipal government area | Check the appropriate Line 1 station for the exact address | A neighbourhood name is not a hotel entrance |
| Hohhot East Railway Station | Line 1 to the same-named metro station | Railway entry and waiting time |
| Hohhot Railway Station | Line 1, changing to Line 2 at Xinhua Square | The interchange and railway boarding process |
| Dazhao or Saishang Old Street accommodation | Compare a direct car with metro plus a local connection | Distance from the final stop to your hotel |
| Hotel away from the metro, or a group with many bags | Licensed taxi, ride-hail or booked transfer | Vehicle capacity and the hotel’s drop-off point |
These are route choices, not a live timetable. When checking first and last trains, select your boarding station and direction. Travellers changing to Line 2 must check the second leg as well: catching the final useful Line 1 service does not necessarily mean the onward connection remains available.
Before booking a hotel described as “central” or “near the metro,” ask for its nearest station, a suitable exit for luggage and directions to the lobby. Around older streets, ask whether vehicles can reach the door or must stop elsewhere. The answer can matter more than a short-looking distance on a map, especially after a long flight.
Compare airport buses by their actual city stop
An airport bus can be a useful option when a service operates that day and its city stop is close to your accommodation. Ask about the exact route, intermediate stops, final stop, departure arrangements, fare and large-luggage rules. “Does it go downtown?” is not specific enough to decide whether it saves a further cross-city journey.
Baita’s passenger services website lists 0471-4942699 for airport bus enquiries and 0471-96777 for airport assistance. The airport passenger services page is a useful starting point. Specify Baita or Shengle, your travel date and whether you need an airport departure or a city-to-airport journey. A contact listing is not a complete current timetable.
Compare the whole journey rather than just the bus ticket: a second vehicle, an awkward stop or a long luggage walk may outweigh a saving. For the return trip, confirm the precise boarding location. It need not be the place where you were dropped off on arrival, even if the district or nearby hotel name sounds familiar.
Taxis and ride-hailing: match the terminal and pickup point
A direct vehicle may be easier with children, older relatives or several suitcases. Before booking, check the vehicle size, luggage capacity, pickup and destination, waiting arrangements and what happens if the flight is delayed. Ask whether the quoted total includes applicable parking or road charges. These are questions for the provider, not costs that can be assumed identical across every booking.
At the airport, follow signs to the designated taxi queue or use the pickup area and registration number shown by your ride-hailing service. The terminal exit and the place where a car may legally wait are not necessarily the same location. Avoid leaving your arranged route with someone soliciting passengers. Keep the hotel’s full Chinese name and entrance address ready to show.
For Shengle, an October 2026 report on regional transport preparations says a dedicated ride-hailing area has been built and is intended to open with the airport. Before the airport opens, do not treat it as an operating pickup point. Use the airport’s instructions applicable to your actual journey, rather than an assumed level or bay number.
Late arrivals, cold weather and phone preparation
For an evening flight, prepare an alternative before departure in case you miss the metro. Scheduled landing time excludes taxiing, disembarkation and the wait for checked baggage. If collection takes you close to the final train, do not rush through an unfamiliar terminal simply to preserve the original plan. Ask the airport service desk about the transport still operating.
Flights arriving late do not guarantee matching metro or bus services. If you have booked a car, check how the provider follows delays and when you should make contact. Keep the confirmation accessible without logging into an app again. A delayed flight may change both your pickup time and the practicality of a separately arranged onward train.
Wind, snow or ice can make an otherwise manageable walk difficult with luggage. A hotel near a station may still involve the wrong exit, steps or an exposed stretch outside. Reduce transfers when that better suits your companions. Road travel can also be affected by weather, so a navigation app’s single estimated journey time should not become a guaranteed arrival time.
Prepare payment and connectivity before landing. Different transport channels may accept different methods; the China mobile payments guide helps with preparation, but keep a workable backup. Consult the China internet and eSIM guide for connectivity planning. Save your hotel address, flight details and transfer contact offline rather than depending entirely on receiving a verification message in the arrivals hall.
Plan the return journey around the correct airport
For departure, work backwards from your flight: confirm the airport and terminal, check the airline’s arrival requirements, allow for transport and possible delays, then choose the hotel departure time. Do not carry a familiar Baita metro route, bus booking or road estimate over to Shengle. If the flight changes, review the transfer destination as well as the date.
For an early flight, check whether the first public transport service leaves enough room for the airport procedures. If it does not, arrange a suitable vehicle before checkout. Airport-hotel guests should ask about shuttle hours, the airport and terminal served, and whether a reservation is required. Reaching the airport grounds is not the same as reaching the correct check-in desk.
If an old confirmation, a map label and a new flight notice disagree, ask the airline to verify the flight number and date. Then have the hotel or transfer provider confirm the address they will use. Keep the updated agreement in writing so that the driver and passenger do not arrive with different understandings of “Hohhot Airport.”
Hohhot airport transport FAQs
1. Has Shengle already replaced Baita?
The October 2026 notice proposes the transition for 00:00 on 26 November 2026. It does not establish that the move has already happened. Check your airline’s current notification and the latest airport announcement for each flight.
2. Is Bayan (Airport) a metro station for Shengle?
No. The Bayan (Airport) and Line 1 guidance here concerns Baita. Do not treat it as a direct Shengle connection. Once your airline confirms Shengle, check that airport’s ground transport arrangements for the travel date.
3. Must I change metro lines for Hohhot East?
On the current network, Bayan (Airport) and Hohhot East Railway Station are both on Line 1. You do not need a line change between them, but must still allow time to enter the railway station and reach your train.
4. Are Hohhot and Hohhot East the same station?
No. Hohhot Railway Station connects with Line 2, while Hohhot East connects with Line 1. Use the full station name on your train ticket, not a generic search for the city’s railway station.
5. Is the metro always best for Dazhao accommodation?
Not necessarily. Compare the final connection to your actual hotel, particularly with large bags or cold weather. A metro journey plus a short vehicle ride and a direct car are different complete journeys worth comparing.
6. Can international arrivals follow domestic terminal directions?
Do not assume so. Baita has domestic and international terminal facilities, and the walk to ground transport depends on your actual arrival building. Follow current terminal signs and allow for immigration and baggage collection.
7. Will an airport bus wait for the last flight?
Do not rely on that as a guarantee. Check the day’s route and departure arrangements and prepare a licensed-vehicle alternative. If your flight is delayed, reconfirm rather than depending only on a timetable saved before departure.
8. What should I check on a relocation-period transfer?
Confirm the full airport name, flight date, terminal, direction of travel, designated pickup area and provider’s acceptance. Check outward and return bookings separately, including hotel shuttles. Do not assume an existing reservation automatically moves to the new airport.
