Divide Kunming sightseeing into the old town and Green Lake, then Dianchi and the Western Hills. Use the metro to approach each area, with walking, buses or a short taxi for the final stretch. Dianchi is a large lake: Haigeng Dam, Haigeng Park and the Western Hills are different destinations.
Non-official geographic map from Green Lake and central Kunming to Haigeng and northern Dianchi. It helps compare the city, lakeshore and western hillside approaches. It does not cover all of Dianchi or Kunming South station and is not a scenic-shuttle, cable-car or step-free route map.

Choose the actual destination
| Place | First option to compare | Remaining connection |
|---|---|---|
| Green Lake and nearby streets | Line 5 around Huashan West Road | Walk to the chosen park entrance |
| Nanping Street and old-town dining | Compare Wuyi Road or Dongfeng Square for the address | Different ends of the pedestrian area suit different stations |
| Haigeng Dam or Haigeng Park | Line 5 plus a surface connection | Save the actual dam or park entrance |
| Western Hills | Line 3 to Xishan Park | The metro reaches the foot of the hill |
| Kunming or Kunming South railway station | Plan for the station on the ticket | They are not interchangeable |
Green Lake and the old town work as a connected walking day. Combining the lakefront with a Western Hills visit requires additional transfers and walking. With a train to Dali that evening, choosing one area leaves a more comfortable margin.
Dianchi is not one map pin
Decide whether the plan is the dam, park, seasonal birdwatching or a cable-car connection. Line 5 stations such as Daba, Yinghai Road and Yuhucun serve different approaches. The right choice depends on the precise endpoint, not just the station name.
Seasonal birdwatching shuttles and holiday extras have operating dates. Do not assume an old free-shuttle recommendation still applies. Check current bus information, and only choose a more distant pickup if the pedestrian route is suitable.
Western Hills: separate each ticket
Line 3 reaches the hillside approach. From there, compare the scenic shuttle, walking or other attraction transport for the places you want to visit. A city metro ticket does not include a shuttle or cable car. Check direction, one-way versus return travel and the last service before buying a bundle.
Choose between returning the same way and leaving on another side. A lakefront exit may be far from your stored bags or pickup. Reducing hill walking can help with limited stamina, but still check steps and accessibility at boarding points.
Metro payment and fares
Prepare an activated Kunming metro code, supported transit card or single ticket. Each fare-paying traveller needs their own credential, used consistently at entry and exit. Another app or phone may not continue the same journey.
Taiwan’s EasyCard and iPASS are not local cards. Hong Kong travellers should distinguish ordinary Octopus from mainland China T-Union products. Linking an overseas bank card does not automatically activate every transport service; test it and keep a backup.
The current metro starting fare is RMB2 for up to 4 km, followed by distance bands. Look up the full station-to-station fare rather than using an old long-distance quote. For a short, walking-focused visit, compare pay-as-you-go with any pass’s current price and coverage.
Buses and taxis
A metro feeder is not necessarily an all-day bus. Some services are designed for weekday commuting peaks. Check operating days, first and last departures, boarding position and direction before relying on one for an afternoon attraction visit.
Taxis can reduce changes in rain or for a group. Use a specific entrance or hotel name instead of “Dianchi.” Allow for demand at busy waterfront locations, and compare quotes for the same endpoint.
Sightseeing between trains
Check hotel storage or station lockers before leaving bags. Storage is available at stations including Kunming Railway Station, Wuyi Road and Xishan Park, but not every station has lockers and availability is not guaranteed. Check size, cost, collection hours and whether retrieval requires entering the paid area.
After the metro, allow for the correct railway entrance, security and boarding. Match Kunming or Kunming South to the ticket. See Kunming to Dali transport for intercity decisions and Kunming Airport to the city for arrivals.
Frequently asked questions
Is Green Lake immediately at Huashan West Road station?
A walk remains. Navigate to the chosen park entrance rather than the centre of the lake.
Can Haigeng Dam and Haigeng Park share one drop-off point?
They are different locations. Pick the exact entrance for your activity.
Does a metro ticket to Xishan Park include transport uphill?
No. Scenic shuttles, cable cars and admission have separate conditions.
Can I walk from Kunming South to the old town during a connection?
Plan a separate city journey. Whether it fits depends on the connection time, luggage and the return boarding requirements.
