Nanjing stays for metro access, family rooms and Xuanwu Lake views
For a first visit with shopping and varied sightseeing, start with Xinjiekou. Choose the Confucius Temple district for Qinhuai evenings, or Xuanwumen for morning lake and city-wall walks before heading out by metro. Gulou and Yihe Road offer another choice: a skyline hotel or a slower stay in historic mansions.
These ten Nanjing hotels offer different reasons to stay: central shopping, evenings by the Qinhuai River, larger family rooms or a view of Xuanwu Lake. Nanjing Railway Station, Nanjing South and Lukou Airport are separate places, so your arrival point also matters. For a quick shortlist, start with Jinling for Xinjiekou, SSAW Grand Theater for Qinhuai evenings, and the Westin for room space near Xuanwu Lake.

Five location choices, including when a station stay makes sense
| Area | Best for | Hotels / transport | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xinjiekou | First visits, shopping and mixed sightseeing | Lines 1/2; Jinling, Ritz-Carlton and Novotel | A large station with many exits; match the hotel entrance |
| Confucius Temple / Qinhuai | Evening walks, local food and family trips | Holiday Inn Aqua City and SSAW Grand Theater; Lines 1 or 3 | Busy evenings and holidays; agree on a precise drop-off |
| Xuanwumen / west Xuanwu Lake | Lake walks, the city wall and swimming | Lakeview Xuanwu and Westin near Line 1 | A lake-facing room is a specific category |
| Xinmofan Road / Gulou / Yihe Road | Longer stays, skyline views or historic houses | Shangri-La, InterContinental and Yihe offer different experiences | Different locations; Yihe has a longer final walk and stairs |
| Nanjing South station area | An early train or a late one-night arrival | Choose for a specific rail-transit purpose | A separate location from Nanjing Railway Station and the city-centre bases below |
If arriving from Shanghai, start with the Shanghai-to-Nanjing transport and station guide, then match the arrival station to your hotel. The ten properties below are city-stay choices; consider a Nanjing South station hotel separately for a specific early-train or late-transit need.

Room sizes below refer to the named category, not every room at the hotel. There are no undated starting-price claims: compare the same stay dates, actual party size, breakfast and cancellation terms.

The ten hotels in detail
Compare these Xinjiekou and Xuanwu Lake hotel options by metro access and room configuration. Match guest numbers, breakfast and cancellation terms before comparing total prices.
Klook1. Jinling Hotel Nanjing

Jinling is a sensible first-visit base if you want Xinjiekou shopping and two metro lines close to your hotel. The address at Hanzhong Road puts you in the commercial centre, making it easy to break up a day of sightseeing with a rest before dinner. Its main booking decision is the tower, rather than the hotel name alone.
Address: 2 Hanzhong Road, Gulou District.
A Superior Double in Jinling Tower is about 25–30m², while the Yatai Tower Deluxe King is about 40m² with a king bed. These are different products with different layouts. For four travellers, look specifically at the 55m² Jinling Tower Two-Bedroom Family Room, listed for four people, rather than assuming a regular twin room has that capacity. The hotel has an indoor pool and fitness facilities; breakfast and lounge access depend on the rate.
Getting there: Use Xinjiekou on Lines 1 and 2, then follow the hotel direction toward 2 Hanzhong Road. Check the tower on your confirmation before choosing an entrance. If arriving by taxi, include Jinling Tower or Yatai Tower in the destination so the driver takes you to the right part of the complex.
Choose it over Novotel when you will use the fuller dining and leisure facilities. If most of your time is outside, compare the Jinling Tower categories before paying more for a high-floor room.

2. The Ritz-Carlton, Nanjing

The Ritz-Carlton is for travellers who want time at the hotel as well as time around Nanjing. Deji Plaza shopping, high-floor views and a substantial room make it especially attractive for an anniversary or a slower city break. The location is Xinjiekou, not the shore of Xuanwu Lake.
Address: 18 Zhongshan Road, Xuanwu District.
Deluxe King and Twin rooms are about 50m². Lake-view rooms are separate categories, so a high floor alone does not guarantee a lake outlook. Rooms have a standalone tub and separate shower, with an indoor pool, gym and spa elsewhere in the hotel. The 130m² Family Connecting Suite is listed for four people with one large bed and two double beds. Club access is a separate entitlement that must appear in your booking.
Getting there: Arrive at Xinjiekou on Lines 1 or 2 and follow signs toward Deji Plaza and the hotel at 18 Zhongshan Road. The metro connection runs through the commercial complex, so allow time to find the hotel entrance and lifts. A taxi directly to the hotel entrance is simpler with heavy bags or a late arrival.
Jinling and Novotel are easier choices when transport is your main concern. Pick the Ritz-Carlton when the larger room, bathing space and leisure facilities are part of the holiday you actually plan to enjoy.

3. Novotel Nanjing Central Suning

Novotel is a practical way to stay in Xinjiekou without making the hotel the focus of the trip. Huaihai Road gives you shops and restaurants nearby, and the metro is within a short walk. Read the complete room name carefully: similarly named standard categories do not all have the same floor area.
Address: 68 Huaihai Road, Qinhuai District.
The Standard Double is about 24m² and the Standard Sunlight Twin is 30m²; a separate Standard Twin is also listed at 24m². The 35m² Family Room has a large bed plus a single bed and is listed for three people. Accor also offers a 32m² Superior Double with a sofa bed, listed for up to four, but you must book that corresponding category rather than transfer its capacity to another room. Facilities include a gym, restaurants and laundry services; laundry service is not the same as a free self-service laundry room.
Getting there: Take Lines 1 or 2 to Xinjiekou, then walk to 68 Huaihai Road. The hotel is about 340m from the station. Identify the Huaihai Road side before leaving the station, rather than emerging at the opposite end of the shopping district. Give taxi drivers the full hotel name and street address.
Choose Novotel when you expect to spend most of the day outside and want easy evening shopping. With two large suitcases, compare the 30m²-plus categories. For a pool-centred stay, compare Jinling or the Ritz-Carlton instead.

4. Holiday Inn Nanjing Confucius Temple Area

Holiday Inn combines evenings around Confucius Temple with the practical comforts of a full-service hotel beside Aqua City mall. You may find it under Holiday Inn Nanjing Confucius Temple Area or Holiday Inn Nanjing Aqua City; both names refer to the property at 1 Jiankang Road.
Address: 1 Jiankang Road, Qinhuai District.
Superior King and Twin rooms are about 30m². Two beds in a regular twin category do not establish occupancy for four adults. Groups can instead compare the 70m² Family Connecting Room, listed for four with a king and two double beds, or the 150m² Two-Bedroom Suite with two king beds. The hotel has a pool and gym on the sixth floor, useful for families returning for an afternoon break. Include children’s breakfast and any extra-bed charges in the comparison.
Getting there: Walk from Sanshanjie on Line 1 or Fuzimiao on Line 3 to the hotel entrance at 1 Jiankang Road. Do not assume any Aqua City mall entrance is the hotel entrance. From Nanjing South, either Line 1 to Sanshanjie or Line 3 to Fuzimiao is an option; choose the final walk according to your exit and luggage.
Pick Holiday Inn when you want Confucius Temple access and a pool in the same stay. Compare the nearby SSAW Grand Theater if a smaller, cinema-themed property and the eastern scenic-area entrance matter more.

5. Yebo Qinhuai SSAW Hotel (Grand Theater), Confucius Temple

Several properties use the Yebo Qinhuai name. This is the Grand Theater branch at 80 Gongyuan Street, not the Qifeng Shiguan, Taoyedu or Calligraphy House branches. Its Republican-era cinema theme and position by the eastern entrance to Confucius Temple suit travellers who want to spend their evenings in the Qinhuai district.
Address: 80 Gongyuan Street, Qinhuai District.
The Cinema Superior King is about 30m² with a two-metre-wide bed. The 45m² Family Quadruple has two double beds and is explicitly listed for four people, making it a more useful group option than a generic twin room. A 70m² Family Connecting Suite with two king beds is another category to compare. The property has a restaurant, gym and reading space; this is a cultural city hotel rather than a large pool resort.
Getting there: Use Fuzimiao on Line 3 and head toward Exit 2 and Gongyuan Street. The hotel describes its location beside the eastern scenic-area gateway. Navigate to the full address, not simply “Yebo Qinhuai.” With luggage on a busy holiday, confirm the vehicle drop-off point before arrival because the surrounding streets carry substantial visitor traffic.
This is the stronger shortlist choice for Qinhuai evening atmosphere and a clearly identified four-person category. Holiday Inn Aqua City is the alternative when a pool and larger mall-side hotel are more important.

6. Lakeview Xuanwu Hotel

Lakeview Xuanwu is useful for a simple routine: walk around the lake and city wall in the morning, then use Line 1 for the rest of the city. It sits near the Westin, but the room sizes and overall style give you a different set of trade-offs.
Address: 193 Zhongyang Road, Gulou District.
A Superior Queen is about 24m², while the Xuanwu Lake View Queen is about 36m². These are different choices for both space and outlook. The 36m² Family Room with a large bed and single bed is listed for three people. Facilities include an indoor pool, gym and the lake-view revolving restaurant. The pool operates seasonally, so confirm opening for your stay dates. A restaurant panorama does not mean your bedroom faces the lake; choose the lake-view room category if that is the reason for booking.
Getting there: Take Line 1 to Xuanwumen and use Exit 1 towards the hotel car park, then follow the entrance signs to 193 Zhongyang Road. This is a city base on the west side of Xuanwu Lake, not a hotel immediately outside Nanjing Railway Station. Allow a separate journey to the station.
Shortlist it for morning lake walks and close metro access. If you carry several large bags or expect more downtime in the room, compare the 36m² categories or the Westin’s 48m² rooms nearby.

7. The Westin Nanjing Xuanwu Lake

This is the Westin at 201 Zhongyang Road beside Xuanwu Lake, not the hot-spring Westin resort in Tangshan, Jiangning. It suits travellers who want a more spacious room on the lake’s western side, with metro access and time for swimming or the gym.
Address: 201 Zhongyang Road, Gulou District; hotel lobby on level 23.
Deluxe City View and Premium Lake View King rooms are both about 48m², with twin categories at the same size. For two people, the view may be a more useful decision than upgrading to a suite. The 138m² Lake-view Two-Bedroom Family Suite is a separate multi-room category with its own capacity; a regular 48m² twin room is not interchangeable with it. The hotel has an indoor heated pool and WestinWORKOUT gym. Lounge access depends on the booked package or qualifying membership.
Getting there: Use Xuanwumen on Line 1 and walk to the hotel entrance at 201 Zhongyang Road; the hotel is about 120m from the station. Reception is on level 23, so include the lift journey when arranging a taxi pickup or leaving after checkout. Use designated crossings on the way to the lakeside rather than following a straight line across Zhongyang Road.
Compare it with Shangri-La when room space matters. The Westin is particularly useful for walks starting around Xuanwumen. If you only need somewhere to sleep and cost comes first, compare the smaller categories at Lakeview Xuanwu next door.

8. Shangri-La Nanjing

Shangri-La is farther north along Zhongyang Road, near Xinmofan Road metro station. It works well for a longer stay with time for hotel dining and relaxation. It is less compelling if you expect to spend every evening shopping around Xinjiekou and return only to sleep.
Address: 329 Zhongyang Road, Gulou District.
Deluxe rooms are about 48m² with city views. The same-size Deluxe Lake View is the category to choose for an outlook toward Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain. Rooms have a separate tub and shower; the hotel also has an indoor pool, health club and Chi Spa. The pool is listed for adult use; families should confirm any child-access arrangements before booking for swimming. The 90m² Family Connecting Suite is listed for four with a king and two single beds. Do not apply that capacity to a normal Deluxe Twin.
Getting there: Take Line 1 to Xinmofan Road and use Exit 1 toward the hotel’s north-side entrance at 329 Zhongyang Road. Nanjing Railway Station and Nanjing South are separate stations with different onward journeys; proximity to the former does not make this a walkable base for an early train from the latter.
Compare Shangri-La with the Westin when generous room space, lake views and hotel dining matter. For stays from 8 to 15 October 2026, the hotel has announced autumn food-and-drinks trade-fair setup and displays in public areas on several floors. Confirm the affected spaces before booking if quiet or uninterrupted use of those areas is important.

9. InterContinental Nanjing

InterContinental occupies Zifeng Tower at Gulou, making it a strong choice for skyline views and access to both Lines 1 and 4. Gulou sits between Xinjiekou and the western side of Xuanwu Lake. It is also a useful base for the Gulou campus of Nanjing University and the Yihe Road district, but the hotel is not directly on the lakefront.
Address: 1 Zhongyang Road, Gulou District.
Deluxe City View and Deluxe Lake View King rooms are both about 48m², so orientation is a key booking choice. The 156m² Two-Bedroom Lake-view Connecting Suite is listed for four with a king and two double beds. The hotel has indoor and outdoor pools, a gym and spa. Both pools are listed for adult use. The seasonal outdoor pool is currently marked temporarily closed, so confirm its status for your stay before booking around swimming. Lounge access should be confirmed in the selected package.
Getting there: Take Lines 1 or 4 to Gulou and head toward Zifeng Tower at 1 Zhongyang Road. The walk from the station is about 170m. Allow for the entrance and lift journey as well as the ground-level walk, especially when leaving for a train. Reaching the lake still involves a further walk or one Line 1 stop to Xuanwumen.
Choose it when a high-rise city stay appeals more than an immediate lakeside walk. Lakeview Xuanwu and the Westin have the more convenient Xuanwumen position for a morning centred on the lake.

10. Relais & Châteaux The Yihe Mansions

Yihe Mansions is an architectural stay as much as an accommodation choice. The historic houses and surrounding Yihe Road neighbourhood reward a slower schedule with time for gardens, dining and walking. It is less suitable if every day begins with a rush to the nearest metro entrance.
Address: 3 Jiangsu Road, Gulou District.
The 35m² Superior Twin has two single beds and accommodates two travellers. Booking a “villa room” does not give you an entire house. No. 9 Villa is a separate three-bedroom product with three king beds, listed for six; confirm the exact package if you want an exclusive group stay. The property offers dining and fitness space, but its multi-storey historic buildings do not have lifts. If you need step-free access, ask about the assigned room and any steps at the entrance before paying.
Getting there: Yunnan Road on Line 4 is the metro approach, with about 720m from the station to the property. The final walk goes through the neighbourhood to 3 Jiangsu Road, where you must identify the reception entrance. A taxi to the agreed entrance is simpler with large cases, a stroller or someone who has difficulty walking; confirm the building and luggage assistance in advance.
Choose Yihe for the atmosphere of Nanjing’s historic mansion district. InterContinental is the stronger option for high-rise views and an interchange station. If stairs are a concern, the floor assignment matters more than the photographs.

The last mile: get the station and hotel entrance right
Nanjing Railway Station sits north of Xuanwu Lake; Nanjing South is the southern high-speed hub. Both connect with city metro lines, but they are not interchangeable. Line 1 is a straightforward spine for Xinjiekou, Xuanwumen, Xinmofan Road and Gulou. Line 3 is the natural approach to SSAW Grand Theater at Fuzimiao. Yihe uses Yunnan Road on Line 4 plus a final walk; a Gulou District address does not mean it is outside Gulou station.
A mall connection or a short map distance is only part of the arrival. Save the full Chinese hotel name, street number and telephone number. Add lift time for high-rise hotels, agree on a drop-off in the Confucius Temple streets, and confirm the reception building at Yihe. A separate station night makes most sense for a very early Nanjing South departure or a late arrival with no sightseeing planned.
Five checks before you book
- Room and tower: distinguish Jinling from Yatai, city from lake views, and standard from Club categories.
- Your actual party: enter every adult and child’s age; confirm occupancy, extra beds, breakfast and whether connecting rooms are guaranteed.
- Access: check a metro exit with a lift, the actual hotel entrance, reception floor and any step-free room requirement.
- The total: compare breakfast, taxes, deposits, parking and the cancellation deadline rather than a headline nightly price.
- Arrival details: save the confirmation and contact details, carry valid travel identification matching the reservation, and notify the hotel about late arrival.
Nanjing hotel FAQs
Is Xinjiekou or Confucius Temple better for a first visit?
Choose Xinjiekou for shopping, mixed sightseeing and the Line 1/2 interchange. Choose Confucius Temple if Qinhuai evenings and local food are central to your trip. One evening visit to the temple district rarely justifies changing hotels.
How many nights make a useful Nanjing city stay?
Three nights is a useful starting plan: one day for Qinhuai and the south of the old city, one for Xuanwu Lake and Gulou, and another for sights farther away. This is an itinerary suggestion, not a required length. With only two nights, a single base usually saves more time than changing districts.
Can four people book any room with two beds?
No. Look for a specifically approved capacity, such as the SSAW Grand Theater Family Quadruple, or a four-person two-bedroom or connecting category at Jinling, Holiday Inn or Shangri-La. Enter everyone’s actual age and number. Bed width, free-child rules and breakfast allowances are separate questions.
Does a Xuanwu Lake hotel name guarantee a lake view?
No. Lakeview Xuanwu, the Westin and Shangri-La sell both city-view and lake-view categories. InterContinental and the Ritz-Carlton also offer high-rise lake outlooks from locations away from the shore. The view stated in your booked room category is what matters.
Should I stay near Nanjing or Nanjing South station?
They are different stations: Nanjing Railway Station is on the north side of Xuanwu Lake; Nanjing South is farther south in the city. Check the exact arrival and departure station on your ticket. Continue to a city-centre base for a normal sightseeing stay; consider the South station area separately for a very early departure or a late one-night stop.
How do these areas connect with Lukou Airport?
Metro Line S1 reaches Nanjing South, where you can change to Line 1 or Line 3 according to the hotel. Yihe’s Line 4 approach adds another transfer. A taxi may be simpler with several passengers, bulky bags or a late arrival. Allow for immigration, baggage reclaim and the last metro, not just your scheduled landing time.
Can I walk everywhere if I stay near Xuanwu Lake?
No. Lakeside and city-wall walks are convenient, but Xinjiekou, Confucius Temple and more distant sights still need metro or taxi journeys. The lake itself is large, so plan around a particular entrance rather than navigating to a single generic lake map pin.
What matters most with a stroller or limited mobility?
Check the actual entrance, lift access and assigned floor. High-rise hotels may require a lift to reception. Yihe’s historic multi-storey buildings have no lifts, so obtain a specific step-free room and route arrangement in advance. The closest metro exit is not automatically an exit with a lift.
Do all ten hotels make sense for a pool-focused stay?
No. Pool facilities are listed for Jinling, the Ritz-Carlton, Holiday Inn Aqua City, Lakeview Xuanwu, the Westin, Shangri-La and InterContinental. The Novotel, SSAW Grand Theater and Yihe recommendations are based on other strengths. Lakeview Xuanwu lists seasonal pool operation. Shangri-La and InterContinental list adult-use restrictions, and InterContinental’s outdoor pool is currently marked temporarily closed. Confirm opening and any child-access arrangements for your dates before booking for swimming.
How should I compare Trip and Klook rates?
Use identical dates and the actual number of adults and children, then match the room, tower, beds, breakfast, final taxes-inclusive amount and cancellation deadline. Platform names can differ, so verify the address. A headline starting price or a two-person rate is not a reliable total for a family.
Bottom line: choose a base you can keep for the whole stay
For a first visit, start with Jinling or Novotel in Xinjiekou. Prioritise SSAW Grand Theater or Holiday Inn Aqua City for Qinhuai evenings, and Lakeview Xuanwu or the Westin for morning lake walks. If the hotel itself is part of the trip, compare the Ritz-Carlton, Shangri-La, InterContinental and Yihe according to skyline, lake or historic-mansion preferences. Pick the area first, then compare two or three hotels under the same booking conditions.
