For a straightforward trip from Nanning to Guilin, compare direct trains from Nanning and Nanning East to Guilin and Guilin North, then add the journey between each station and your hotel. The quickest train is not automatically the quickest hotel-to-hotel option. A convenient departure station and a sensible arrival point can matter more than a small difference in the railway timetable.
If your actual destination is West Street in Yangshuo, Xingping or a guesthouse by the Yulong River, decide whether you want a night in Guilin before buying the first ticket. Arriving in Guilin and travelling onward to Yangshuo are separate planning decisions. Do not build an unnecessary luggage transfer into the trip just because “Guilin” is the best-known place name.

Use this comparison to eliminate awkward options before looking for the cheapest fare. If two trains arrive at similar times, a shorter road transfer or one fewer change may be worth more than a modest ticket saving. There is little benefit in turning a simple relocation into a multi-stage journey unless the intermediate stop is part of the holiday.
Nanning or Nanning East: get the departure station right
Nanning, written 南宁, and Nanning East, 南宁东, are different stations, not alternative entrances to the same building. Keep the complete Chinese name on your booking and navigation screen. “The high-speed train station” is not a sufficiently precise instruction for a driver. Metro Line 1 provides access to Nanning station via 火车站 and to Nanning East via 火车东站. Guangxi University’s 2026 arrival guidance confirms the Line 1 connection for both railway stations. Reaching the metro platform is not the same as reaching the national-rail departure gate: leave room for walking, lifts, security and finding the correct waiting area.
Starting in Chaoyang, Qingxiu or Wuxiang can produce different results. Compare the actual routes from your hotel to both railway stations instead of treating Nanning as a single starting point. For an early train, work backwards to your hotel departure time. Check the first metro at the station you will actually use, not just the first departure from the end of the line. If it does not give you a comfortable margin, arrange an appropriate road transfer or choose a later train.
Which Guilin station works for your hotel?
For a city stay, start by comparing Guilin station with Guilin North. Guilin West is another separate station, not a western exit from Guilin station. Include it only when the service available on your date and the onward journey suit your plans. A ticket search shows railway destinations; it cannot choose the best one for your particular accommodation.
Two hotel examples illustrate why blanket advice is unreliable. Four Points by Sheraton Guilin Central describes itself as approximately three kilometres from Guilin station. Central accommodation still involves a last-mile journey. Meanwhile, Shangri-La Guilin’s location information lists approximately 5.1 kilometres to Guilin North, 6.5 to Guilin station and 9.6 to Guilin West. Those figures describe that hotel, not every riverside property, and are not guaranteed driving times.
Check the hotel’s Chinese name and full address, particularly for chains with multiple branches. A property near the central lakes and one beside the river farther north may favour different arrival stations. Ask where a booked driver would meet you and whether a hotel transfer is included or charged separately.
Do not rely on an old photograph to locate your bus. A December 2025 transport-authority notice adjusted routes 5 and 91 because of work at Guilin station’s forecourt. It is a useful reminder that stops can change, not a claim that all those works remain active. Follow current signs and check the direction of travel. Journey time and fares: compare like with like
“Two hours from Nanning to Guilin” is not a hotel-to-hotel promise. A September 2024 Nanning Railway route feature gave a fastest Nanning East–Guilin example of one hour and 59 minutes. That is a dated benchmark, not a current timetable for every departure. Do not reuse its old discounted fare or first-train time when planning a new trip.
Search your date on China Railway 12306, compare the exact departure and arrival stations, and open the services you would genuinely take. Check the seat category, displayed duration, availability and change or refund conditions before paying. A low headline price is not useful if it belongs to an inconvenient station or a seat option you do not want. Optional insurance and booking services are separate from the railway fare.
The practical budget has three parts: the train, your Nanning hotel-to-station journey, and the Guilin station-to-hotel journey. Rail tickets are assessed per traveller; a road transfer depends on the vehicle and service booked. For a group, compare the total rather than multiplying a solo traveller’s estimate. Confirm luggage capacity as well as passenger seats.
Book fixed weekend and holiday movements with particular care. Nanning Railway’s August 2026 weekend announcement added trains on routes including Guilin and highlighted Friday-evening and Sunday-evening demand. It does not establish a permanent weekly timetable or guarantee last-minute seats. Settle the necessary intercity journey before filling the day with less important reservations.
Direct trains, connections and a genuine Liuzhou stop
If you are simply moving hotels, start with a direct journey involving one boarding and one arrival. When a booking result offers a connection, check whether both trains use the same station. Moving between Nanning and Nanning East, or between Guilin North and Guilin station, requires a city transfer and another station-entry process. It is not merely a platform change.
A family or a traveller with limited mobility may reasonably prefer a longer connection over a tightly timed itinerary. Count the time needed to leave the platform, find the route and board again, not just the minutes spent on moving trains. Do not assume assistance, lifts or an accessible transfer route without checking the relevant stations.
If you want lunch or sightseeing in Liuzhou, plan it as a real stop with the rail segments you need. Do not treat an ordinary through ticket as a hop-on, hop-off pass. Allow for leaving the station, reaching the place you want to visit, returning and going through security again. If the available interval only permits a rushed meal with all your luggage, save Liuzhou for a proper visit.
Connecting from a flight into Nanning
Do not match a train to the aircraft’s scheduled landing time alone. Arrival formalities, checked baggage, walking and flight delays all affect the connection. First check the date-specific options from Wuxu Airport station; do not assume that every service runs directly to Guilin.
If the workable train departs from a city station, include that transfer explicitly. Save the complete itinerary, with the station name for every segment, rather than a screenshot showing only the final destination. For a late arrival or a particularly important onward journey, a night in Nanning can be more practical than building the trip around catching the last suitable train.
Luggage, meeting points and arrival-day organisation
Airline baggage allowances do not automatically apply on the railway. The 12306 carry-on rules give an ordinary adult passenger a 20-kilogram allowance and a combined length, width and height limit of 130 centimetres per item on EMU trains, alongside other item-weight and special-equipment provisions. Measure a large suitcase before travelling rather than assuming that an airline-accepted checked bag is suitable.
Keep the identity document used for the booking, train details and hotel address accessible. With children or several bags, decide who will handle documents and who will manage the luggage before entering the queue. Contact the railway in advance if you need assistance; an old photograph of an escalator is not confirmation of the route available on your travel day.
After arriving, identify the authorised taxi queue or designated ride-hailing meeting area before contacting a driver. For a prearranged pickup, send the date, train number and complete arrival-station name. Confirm the meeting point, waiting arrangements if the train is delayed, and room for your bags. A hotel called “central” is not enough information for a reliable pickup.
Onward to Yangshuo, or back to Nanning airport
Yangshuo railway station is in Xingping, as explained in China Railway’s station feature. West Street, the Yulong River area and Xingping accommodation have different last-mile requirements. Compare the whole route to your guesthouse before deciding whether travelling through Guilin city makes sense.

You cannot assume that a train arrival delivers you directly to the boat. Confirm the pier, meeting deadline and luggage arrangements, and use the Guilin-to-Yangshuo transport guide for the onward decision.
For the return trip, work backwards from your airline’s check-in and baggage deadlines. Add the transfer from the exact Nanning railway station to the terminal, plus a margin for disruption. Separately purchased rail and air tickets should not be assumed to include a protected connection. If a missed flight would seriously affect the trip, returning to Nanning the previous day is worth considering.
