For most travelers arriving by high-speed train, the simplest predictable route to Hong Kong International Airport is to walk from West Kowloon to Kowloon Station and take the Airport Express. A taxi is worth considering if your group cannot comfortably manage the walk with its luggage. The important distinction is that your high-speed train arrival time is not the time you can board the airport train.
West Kowloon, Kowloon and Austin are different stations
Hong Kong West Kowloon is the cross-border high-speed railway terminal. Kowloon Station serves the Airport Express and Tung Chung Line; nearby Austin is on the Tuen Ma Line. You do not need to take a train from Austin to reach the Airport Express.
On arrival, leave the high-speed train on B4, follow the arrival route to B2 for the Mainland and Hong Kong immigration formalities, then exit the ticket gates with your luggage. This is a landside connection, not an airside airport transfer. Do not assume your bags will be checked through from the railway to your flight.
MTR’s station guide gives an indicative 12-minute walk between West Kowloon and Kowloon Station. Allow extra time for lifts, crowds and finding the right entrance. That walking estimate excludes getting off the high-speed train and clearing the border.
Choose the transfer that suits your group
| Option | Boarding and destination | Best fit | Time and cost logic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walk + Airport Express | West Kowloon → Kowloon Airport Express → Airport Station | Travelers who can roll their own bags and want a predictable rail journey | 22 minutes on the Airport Express; adult Octopus fare HK$105, Smart Ticket HK$115 |
| Airport bus | Airport-bound stop near West Kowloon → appropriate airport terminal stop | Budget-led travelers with a generous flight buffer | Add the walk, waiting and road traffic; a bus origin departure is not its West Kowloon passing time |
| Taxi or booked transfer | Designated West Kowloon pickup → airline terminal | Families, bulky luggage and reduced walking capacity | Meter plus applicable extras, or a confirmed vehicle quote including waiting and luggage |
A general city transport pass should not be your starting purchase for this connection. Compare the airport single fare with the whole-car quote for your party. An unused return leg does not create a saving, and ordinary urban travel products should not be assumed to include the Airport Express.
How to make the walking connection
- Finish the arrival formalities and gather the entire group after the gates before starting the transfer.
- Follow signs for Kowloon Station and Airport Express through the signed footbridge or pedestrian-subway connections. Use the lift route if needed rather than following a staircase shortcut.
- At Kowloon, identify the Airport Express entrance. The same station also has Tung Chung Line gates, which are not the gates you need.
- Take the airport-bound train and leave at Airport Station. AsiaWorld-Expo is a separate stop beyond the airport.
- Follow your airline’s current terminal and check-in information. Checking in, dropping bags, security, departure formalities and the walk to the gate still lie ahead.
Use the official West Kowloon service guide and location map for orientation. Station signs take priority if a walkway changes. Ask staff in the arrivals hall about lifts before committing to a route with a stroller, wheelchair or several heavy cases.
Airport Express tickets: choose Kowloon
The current Kowloon–Airport adult single fare is HK$105 with Octopus, an eligible contactless bank card or accepted transit QR payment, and HK$115 with a Smart Ticket. For children aged 3–11, the corresponding Octopus/QR fare is HK$52.50 and Smart Ticket fare HK$57.50. Contactless bank-card travel does not receive the child fare. Check the MTR fare table against the final reseller price for the same station and passenger category.
The Klook Airport Express product offers station-specific tickets and direct QR entry; a one-way ticket can be used from the city toward the airport. Select Kowloon rather than Hong Kong Station, which is a different station on Hong Kong Island. Check validity, child-ticket availability and cancellation terms for the option you actually buy.

Airport buses and taxis
The Transport Department lists A22, A25 and E23/E23A airport-bound services near West Kowloon, with the airport-bound boarding area marked D on its location map. The opposite-direction stop is not interchangeable. Consult the official station-access page and Citybus route information for your departure. Compare the actual stopping pattern to your terminal, not merely the word “Airport” on the destination display.
For an ordinary urban taxi, follow signs to the B2 taxi queue at West Kowloon. Booked fleet taxis and other transfers can use different designated pickup points. Confirm the floor, exit and vehicle before leaving the arrivals area. Tell the operator your train, passenger count, bags and any stroller or mobility equipment; establish when waiting charges start in case immigration takes longer than expected.
Work backward from your flight, not from a 22-minute train ride
Begin with your airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines. Add the airport procedures, surface transfer, border processing and a buffer for railway delays. Separately purchased rail and airline tickets should not be treated as a protected connection.
As a planning example, if your aim is to reach the airport at 16:00, you might target boarding at Kowloon around 15:20, then work farther backward for walking, waiting and exiting West Kowloon. Immigration must be added separately. This is a planning allowance, not a promised transfer time. If only one tightly timed high-speed train fits, book an earlier arrival instead of assuming every stage will be unusually quick.
The current Kowloon airport-bound service runs from 05:53 to 00:52 under the timetable effective 13 September 2026. A late flight does not mean airport trains operate all night. Plan a road alternative after the last train and check the availability of station access routes. During severe weather, use current airline and transport notices rather than a normal-day timetable.
In-town check-in and luggage
In-town check-in is limited to specified airlines, eligible flights and electronic travel documents, during the listed operating hours. Read the Kowloon column on the MTR in-town check-in page and confirm with the operating airline. An airline appearing under Hong Kong Station does not establish availability at Kowloon. If your flight or documents are ineligible, take your luggage to the airport rather than wasting time searching for a counter.
The Airport Express may make the train ride comfortable, but you still move your bags between stations yourself. A parent managing a child and two large cases should weigh that physical effort against a direct taxi, even if the train tickets cost less. For the separate cross-border leg, see our Hong Kong–Shenzhen transport guide.
FAQ
Does the Airport Express leave from West Kowloon?
No. Exit the high-speed station after border formalities, walk to Kowloon Station and enter the separate Airport Express service there.
Should I buy a Hong Kong Station or Kowloon Station ticket?
Choose Kowloon for this transfer. Buying for another station can mean paying more than necessary or needing a fare adjustment; do not build a connection around correcting the ticket.
Is the full transfer just 12 plus 22 minutes?
No. Those are the indicative walk and Airport Express ride only. Train unloading, immigration, exits, lifts, waiting and airport walking are additional stages.
Is Austin a better interchange because it is closer?
Austin serves the Tuen Ma Line, not the Airport Express. For this journey, walking directly to Kowloon avoids unnecessary urban-train routing and gates.
Will my train luggage transfer automatically to my flight?
Do not assume so. Collect and carry it yourself. Eligible travelers can use the separate Kowloon in-town check-in service; otherwise check bags at the airport.
Where do I catch an airport-bound bus?
Use the airport-bound area D shown on the Transport Department station-access map, then verify the stop flag and direction. An arrival-from-airport stop may be on the wrong side for your departure.
Is a taxi always cheaper for a group?
No. Compare your party’s actual eligible train fares with the full taxi or transfer cost, including applicable extras. Luggage capacity and reduced walking may matter more than the lowest fare.
Can I use the Airport Express after a late high-speed arrival?
Only if you can complete immigration and the walk before the final airport-bound departure, currently 00:52 at Kowloon. Have a road alternative when the margin is small.
Can a child use my bank card for the child fare?
Contactless bank-card travel is charged at the adult rate. Choose an eligible child Octopus, transit QR payment or child ticket under the relevant rules.
Should I buy a return ticket or a city pass?
Start with a single if you only need this airport journey. Buy a return only when you will use both legs and the validity works; evaluate any urban pass against separate city travel needs.
