For the Dujiangyan irrigation scenic area, first search trains from Xipu to Lidui Park rather than automatically booking Dujiangyan station. Lidui Park is useful for the old town, South Bridge and the southern approach to the attraction. Starting at the higher Qinyan Tower side requires a separate road connection after arrival.
If South Bridge after dark is the priority, choose a workable return train before fixing the day’s start. The scenic area, riverside lights and Chengdu metro each have different operating windows; the return is more than one train ride.
Geographic context around Dujiangyan
Use this geographic map to place South Bridge and the surrounding streets near Dujiangyan. It is not a scenic-area route diagram; follow the entrance and shuttle arrangements on the day. For metro connections before leaving Chengdu, the official Chengdu Metro app provides its network map.

Lidui Park, Dujiangyan or Qingchengshan station?
| Railway station | Best suited to | Onward journey |
|---|---|---|
| Lidui Park / 离堆公园 | Old town, South Bridge and southern scenic-area access | Walk or use a short local connection; the station is outside the ticketed attraction |
| Dujiangyan / 都江堰 | The wider city or a particularly convenient train | Add a road transfer to the irrigation scenic area |
| Qingchengshan / 青城山 | Mount Qingcheng | A further connection reaches the mountain entrance; it is not the nearest station for the irrigation works |
| Yingbin Road and other local stops | A destination specifically near that station | Check the actual hotel or attraction before choosing solely for availability |
Dujiangyan is a city name, a station name and an attraction name. They are not interchangeable. This route concerns the irrigation system, old town and South Bridge, not Panda Valley. Chengdu Research Base is another separate attraction covered in the Chengdu Panda Base guide.
From central Chengdu to Xipu
Metro Lines 2 and 6 serve Xipu. Visitors staying around Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square can start by comparing Line 2, while other hotel locations may favour Line 6 or another transfer. There is no need to detour through the centre first.
The metro and national railway share a transport hub but not a ticketing system. Your metro ticket or ordinary Tianfutong travel code is not a reserved railway ticket. Follow signs for the railway and its waiting area, and complete the required document checks. A same-station interchange is not a guarantee that every passenger can reach a train in a few minutes.
For a first visit, allow at least around 30 minutes for the interchange, more on holidays or with children and manual document checks. This is a planning recommendation rather than an official minimum.
Booking the train and considering Chengdu East
On China Railway 12306, search Xipu / 犀浦 to Lidui Park / 离堆公园 for the actual date and both directions. Services may carry an S prefix as well as other designations, so filtering only for G-series trains can hide useful results.
If staying beside Chengdu East or arriving there from another city, check for a suitably timed direct train to Lidui Park. It can save a change when the timetable fits; waiting a long time for it may be less convenient than travelling via Xipu. An old report that a particular train was introduced is not today’s operating timetable.
Use the fare and duration for the selected service, then add the Chengdu metro and any transfer to your chosen scenic entrance. Descriptions of reaching Dujiangyan in half an hour generally refer to a rail section, not the full journey from your hotel.
Book with the original document you will carry. Taiwan and Hong Kong travellers should select the relevant Mainland Travel Permit category; passport users should enter passport details consistently. Register children according to the actual ticket conditions.
From Lidui Park station to the southern entrance or Qinyan Tower
| Approach | How to reach it | Why choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Lidui Park / southern side | Leave the station and follow a pedestrian route to the actual scenic entrance | Works well with the old town and South Bridge |
| Qinyan Tower side | Take a licensed taxi or arranged vehicle to the currently open entrance | Begin with a higher viewpoint before moving towards the main irrigation works |
| Old town and South Bridge only | Use a riverside and old-town walking route | Suitable for an evening-focused visit, but not equivalent to touring the full irrigation attraction |
The railway station, park entrance and South Bridge are separate points. Navigate to the place you intend to enter. If admission is nearing its cutoff, visit the ticketed attraction before lingering at every photo stop outside.
Starting on the Qinyan Tower side can put the higher viewpoint before the route towards Erwang Temple and the irrigation works. It still involves slopes and steps. Descending is not automatically easy on knees, and the route should not be described as step-free. Check the day’s open entrance and visitor route before telling a driver where to drop you.
If South Bridge is the next stop, plan a route that brings you back towards the southern side. Ending at an unexpected exit can add an unnecessary journey.
South Bridge at night: check both final connections
The return has two parts: the railway to Xipu and the metro or other transport from Xipu to your hotel. Evening services became more regular under an April 2026 timetable change, but the actual date’s departures still need checking. Do not rely on an old article’s fixed 9 pm or 10 pm last train.
Work backwards from your booked departure, including the walk from the river, any bag collection and station procedures. Even a nearby station needs a sensible buffer. Then check the last metro in the correct direction and any later transfer; if it will not connect, budget for a taxi or consider staying overnight.
The appearance of the river lights depends on the lighting arrangements, weather and water conditions. A photograph does not guarantee the same colour or an exact switch-on time. Leave flexibility rather than building the entire evening around the last possible train.
Independent rail travel, a combined tour or a private car?
Rail travel works well for the irrigation scenic area, old town and South Bridge at your own pace. Adding Mount Qingcheng makes a much fuller day of walking and transfers. A combined tour can handle the road connections but should not be assumed to include a South Bridge evening.
The rail option below is specifically Xipu to Lidui Park. The Klook option is a Chengdu-departure Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng day tour with Chinese-language guiding. Read its meeting point, return time, document eligibility and optional internal transport costs. English-speaking travellers should not treat the Chinese-language option as an English guided tour.
A private car can suit a group, luggage or a Qinyan Tower start. Specify the irrigation scenic area, exact pickup and drop-off points, whether the driver waits until after dark and any overtime charges. A one-way transfer does not imply an all-day vehicle.
For families and older travellers, reduce the checklist
The irrigation attraction involves walking and stopping to understand the waterworks; the old town is more than one short street. Families can visit the scenic area by day, eat and rest, then decide whether to stay for evening views. Adding both Mount Qingcheng and Panda Valley can turn the day into continuous transfers.
Choose a route that fits the actual steps and accessible sections on the current visitor map. A traveller uncomfortable on stairs should not be pressured into a supposedly easy downhill circuit. Leave big bags at the hotel where possible, or establish storage and collection hours before bringing them. The Chengdu accommodation guide covers practical bases.
Frequently asked questions
Can I book Dujiangyan station if Lidui Park is sold out?
Yes, as an alternative to compare, but add the road connection to the attraction and adjust the return plan. Another Lidui Park departure may still be easier overall.
Can I use an ordinary Tianfutong metro code on the train?
Do not treat a metro code as a railway ticket. Follow the railway product’s rules; a confirmed train booking with the correct identity document is the clearest option for visitors.
Does seeing South Bridge count as visiting the irrigation system?
The bridge and old town are enjoyable public spaces, but the core works and paths inside the scenic area need a separate visit. Allow time for both if you want both.
Can I continue directly to a Chengdu airport?
Plan it separately, distinguishing Shuangliu from Tianfu Airport and allowing for airline check-in. Arrival at Xipu is not arrival at the airport.
