Plan Guangzhou by district. In Beijing Road and old Liwan, use the metro to reach the area and continue on foot. Around Zhujiang New Town and Canton Tower, combine the metro, APM and riverside walking. Taxis work well for awkward final stretches, while passes only help if your actual rides justify their price.
Match transport to the area
| Plan | Useful approach | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Beijing Road and Haizhu Square | Metro followed by walking | The correct end of the shopping area for your destination |
| Chen Clan Academy and old Liwan | Metro, short walks and occasional buses | Cars may not reach a shop inside an old lane |
| Zhujiang New Town and Huacheng Square | Metro plus APM for north–south movement | APM has its own fare arrangements |
| Canton Tower and the riverfront | Metro or APM, then walking | Choose the riverbank with the view you want |
| Airport or Guangzhou South | A dedicated departure plan | Include terminal access or railway boarding procedures |

Boarding: check the line, direction and exit
Search using the full hotel or attraction address. Once inside, confirm the line and next station before boarding. A large interchange can involve substantial walking; a route with fewer changes may be easier than one advertised as slightly faster. At the destination, check the street map before leaving the station.
Every fare-paying traveller needs their own ticket or credential. Use the same method at both ends. A Guangzhou transport code is distinct from an ordinary shopping-payment code. If setup is incomplete, use a ticket machine or service centre, and allow for security with luggage.
Using an overseas bank card
Guangzhou Metro accepts eligible overseas-issued contactless Visa, Mastercard, JCB and American Express cards, alongside supported UnionPay cards. Check contactless and small-value password-free settings with your issuer. Present one card rather than a whole wallet.
Enter and exit with the same physical card or device; a phone-wallet copy is not a substitute halfway through the journey. Ask staff about failed taps and keep a backup payment option. Metro card acceptance does not establish that every bus or Guangdong intercity service accepts the same card.
Yang Cheng Tong or a day pass?
Yang Cheng Tong is a stored-value payment product. A metro day pass provides time-limited travel. The one-day pass costs RMB20 for 24 hours from first entry and the three-day pass at RMB50 for 72 hours. Passes are sold at stations; used passes are non-refundable.
Add up the fares for the journeys you will actually make. For example, four rides priced at RMB4 each total RMB16, below a one-day pass; six such rides total RMB24. This illustrates the calculation, not a claim that every journey costs RMB4. Do not count taxi, bus or boat costs as money saved by a metro-only product.
Before buying, confirm coverage for any Foshan lines, APM, Haizhu tram or Guangdong intercity travel. Also consider the purchase cost of a physical card. A short visit does not automatically qualify for savings designed around a commuter’s monthly spending.
APM around the new central axis
The APM links the Linhexi–Canton Tower corridor and helps with north–south journeys around Huacheng Square and Haixinsha. Its published flat fare is RMB2, separate from the ordinary metro distance calculation. Follow its entrance-payment and exit instructions; changing from Line 3 does not mean the APM is automatically free.
For a short walk within the square, descending to a station may add effort. APM is more useful when returning from the riverfront to the northern business district or when companions are tired. Haizhu tram is a separate service, not an extension of the APM.
Buses, taxis and ferries
A direct bus can simplify a short surface journey. Check the full route number, direction and displayed fare; the return stop may be elsewhere. For a timed appointment in rush hour, the metro is usually easier to plan around.
Use taxis for luggage, wet weather or a group sharing the fare. Enter the hotel’s correct Chinese branch name and pick a vehicle-accessible road for restaurants in pedestrian areas. River crossings and traffic mean a short distance on the map can take longer than expected.
Ferries can add a river experience, but check the actual pier, route and operating notices. A transport ferry and a sightseeing cruise are different products.
Evening and departure-day planning
Before staying late at Canton Tower, check the last connection on every line needed for your hotel. Festivals, exhibitions and major events can affect crowd control. Do not place a restaurant or viewing reservation immediately before the final feasible departure.
Use our Baiyun Airport guide for airport journeys and Hong Kong to Guangzhou guide for cross-border arrivals. Choosing a better base with the Guangzhou accommodation guide may remove repeated journeys between the old centre and Tianhe.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Taiwan’s EasyCard?
No. Prepare an accepted transport code, contactless bank card, Yang Cheng Tong or single ticket.
Is an ordinary Hong Kong Octopus the same as Yang Cheng Tong?
No. Check whether you hold a cross-border product supporting mainland China T-Union transport and follow that issuer’s conditions.
Does the three-day pass start when I buy it?
The official physical pass runs for 72 hours from first entry. Other electronic or promotional products may have different activation terms.
Does APM travel include admission to Canton Tower?
No. Transport and tower observation or entertainment tickets are separate purchases.
